Tenth Doc/Rose ballad

It's that time of year when Murray Gold feels the need to come up with a song, about ten seconds of which will appear in a Christmas special, stripped almost entirely of meaning... and the meaning invariably being that Rose is stuck in another dimension. However, rumors circulate that maybe, as the lyrics suggest, the Doctor has decided to say "fuck the universe, I want Billie Piper"...

The Stowaway by Kylie Minogue and the Titanic Blunders

Once I found
A stowaway
Upon my ship
On Christmas Day
I was fair so I gave him a chance...

"You shouldn't be here.
What's your tale?
I ought to throw you
To the whale."
He just smiled and said "Come here, let's dance."

He said, "Borrow or steal,
I'll find a way
To be with my lover
Upon Christmas Day!

And I'll run and I'll roam!
I'll cover the ground!
This Christmas I'll see you,
I'll be around!"

He told me bout
His girl back home
Waiting patient,
All alone
While we danced I shed a little tear

He closed his eyes
All out at sea
I think he danced
With her, not me
I'll just have to wait another year.

He said, "Borrow or steal,
I'll find a way
To be with my lover
Upon Christmas Day!

And I'll run and I'll roam!
I'll cover the ground!
This Christmas I'll see you,
I'll be around!"

I think of him
Now and again,
I wonder how
His journey ends
As I sail by on my lonesome sea

That stranger with
The haunting face
Here, then gone
Without a trace
Lying with his love, that's where he'll be.

"Beg, borrow or steal,
I'll find a way
To be with my lover
Next Christmas Day!

And I'll run and I'll roam!
I'll cover the ground!
Next Christmas I'll see you,
I'll be around!"

"Beg, borrow or steal,
I'll find a way
To be with my lover
Next Christmas Day!

And I'll run and I'll roam!
I'll cover the ground!
Next Christmas I'll see you,
I'll be around!"

"Beg, borrow or steal,
I'll find a way
To be with my lover
Next Christmas Day!

And I'll run and I'll roam!
I'll cover the ground!
Next Christmas I'll see you,
I'll be around!"

"Beg, borrow or steal,
I'll find a way
To be with my lover
Next Christmas Day!

And I'll run and I'll roam!
I'll cover the ground!
Next Christmas I'll see you,
I'll be around..."

ENOUGH Tenth Doc/Rose angst! God. As soon as he regenerated he was over Romana...

Hey, am I in charge of the show?

No.

As I say, Murray Gold's songs are often totally out of context. Song for Ten is pure angst about Rose, but the one verse used was the one that mentioned Christmas and was all about the new Doctor. Love Don't Roam isn't at all about Tenth/Rose angst until they play it in an angst scene in an angst story. I still have NO idea what The Angel and The Devil is about, for example.

Since it appears to be Kylie singing it, the titular girl might be Martha Jones (since Rose is niether alone nor waiting patiently).

Content aside, I enjoyed the tune - and much better than some of the crap music that is pumped out all the time at Christmas...

Oh, and I don't think he ever QUITE got over Romana. In Castrovalva, the Fifth Doctor tries not to have an anxiety attack when Adric says she's gone. In Earthshock, Adric bitches that he intends to find Romana because SHE would be a better friend to him which in turn upset the Doctor more. In Arc of Infinity, he loses his rag when Thalia needles him about a certain blonde.

As for the audios, the Sixth Doctor is more delighted to see her again than when he meets Evelyn again, and the Eighth Doctor keeps trying to get her back travelling with him...

But it was never this angsty, no.

Perhaps it is displacement? The Doctor is brooding over Rose because it's so much easier than brooding over the other crap life has dealt him?

What?

Damnit, you're right.

Also, you DIDN'T write Random Shoes... so what was Nigel doing in it? Eh, I digress..

I still have NO idea what The Angel and The Devil is about, for example.

I can't get it out of my mind that there's meant to be a deep meaning behind the lyrics which are just PRETENDING to be kitschy 1930s show tune style fluff...

But reading a thread in OG where people were trying to dissect the meaning of "One and one and one make three!" caused my brain to melt.

Well, I haven't heard it - I really only hear the Murray Gold songs when they're used in an ep.

Oh, and I don't think he ever QUITE got over Romana.

[Several argument winning examples]

Okay, you've got a good point indeed.

I guess that's another reason of yours for dismissing the books as uncanonical - the fact the EDAs made Romana an ice-queen bitch who had a mutual hatred with the Doctor? (Easily being the single greatest change of personality seen between regenerations..)

Perhaps it is displacement? The Doctor is brooding over Rose because it's so much easier than brooding over the other crap life has dealt him?

Ah, now THAT works for me - he has after all been through the genocide of his own people and finds himself endless confronting the bastards who killed them.. yeah, he has got more than enough to be angry about in that regard..

They just rip me off.

Torchwood rips me off as well...

One and one and one make three seems to be about Captain Jack, but the Devil surely refers to the Master? Unless it's about the Cult of Skaro, but there are four of them...

But reading a thread in OG where people were trying to dissect the meaning of "One and one and one make three!" caused my brain to melt.
Oh. I gave up after the "it refers to Rose still technically being aboard the TARDIS, since the Doctor is mooning over her"... which defeats the whole point of the scene where Martha says the Doctor is now trying to move on!

Well, I haven't heard it - I really only hear the Murray Gold songs when they're used in an ep.

is where I got it.

Yay!

In Zagreus the Doctor is pretty pissed off with her... but it's clear he's winding himself up so he can leave the universe with no regrets. A kind of "Yeah, well, I never like you anyway" thing which, typically, Romana sees through and doesn't bite.

Ah, now THAT works for me - he has after all been through the genocide of his own people and finds himself endless confronting the bastards who killed them.. yeah, he has got more than enough to be angry about in that regard..
So, the Rose the Doctor is mooning about is just a generic blonde representing all he's lost.

So pretty much all the times he has a 'Rose moment' it's angst, not squee.

In the words of the immortal one: let's move on...
